Outpost

Title: Outpost
Series: The Fylking #1
Author: F.T. McKinstry
Publication Date: November 1, 2015
Genre: Fantasy

Synopsis
Nine thousand suns ago, a race of immortal warriors came from the stars through a rare alignment and stepped onto the world of Math, a world much like their own, cradled by mountains, cold seas and tall forests. A perfect place for a backwater outpost from which to fight their ancient war. The realm they claimed came to be known as Dyrregin, Gateway of the Gods.

They call themselves the Fylking. Unseen by all save those sensitive to the Otherworld, the Fylking taught seers to build and ward over the Gate, an interdimensional portal spanning the realm like a sigil shining on the surface of the world. The Fylking’s enemies, pitiless beings who think nothing of annihilating a world to gain even a small advantage, are bent on destroying it. They succeeded once, leaving Dyrregin in abandoned desolation for a thousand suns.

Twelve centuries have passed since the Fylking returned. Dyrregin is at war. Seers are disappearing and their immortal guardians are blind, deceived by their own kind. A Gate warden with a tormented past discovers a warlock using Fylking magic to gather an army of warriors that cannot die. A King’s ranger who defends the wilds of the realm with unswerving honor is snared in a political trap that hides a sinister agenda. And a knitter touched by the gods catches the eye of a dark immortal warrior with no name and the power to summon storms.

Bound by synchronicity, forced to find allies in unlikely places, these three mortals are drawn into a maelstrom of murder, treachery, sorcery and war, fertile ground for both their personal demons and those of their immortal masters, who cast long shadows indeed. When they uncover the source of the rising darkness, they must rally to protect the Gate against a plot that will violate the balance of cosmos, destroy the Fylking and leave the world of Math in ruins.

The god they serve is as fickle as a crow.

We Had A Job To Do: World War II Through The Eyes of Those Who ServedWe Had A Job To Do: World War II Through The Eyes of Those Who Served by Theresa Anzaldua
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Going into the book I was expecting it to be riveting and exciting. I was somewhat upset to find that the book read more like an interesting history book than an adventure style novel. That aside the book has some very interesting stories about those who served the country and fought for freedom in one way or another in world war 2. I felt like a learned a lot more from this book about World War 2 than I have from most history books because it was more interesting.

Review:

I was sent a free digital copy of How to be an International Spy in exchange only for my honest and unbiased review of How to be an International Spy.

This book is like one of those books that your child would bring home from the book fair at their local school. It has an awesome cover that makes children want it without even turning a page. This book is not meant for young children as it requires an understanding of puzzles, numbers, government, and words. Personally I would see this book as being read by an advanced third grader , but more likely a fourth through sixth grader. The puzzles are not easy, but they are solvable with some effort and work. The illustrations are well done and they provide a good backdrop to the book.

The book itself is not just some play book it actually teaches children about what it means to be a spy (to a certain extent). It also explains concepts like types of spies and types of secrets. I personally enjoyed the history section on real spies, their actions, and their time lines.I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to anyone looking to learn more about spies, their gadgets, and have some fun.

I was sent a free copy of You Rule!: A Practical Guide to Creating Your Own Kingdom (Lonely Planet Kids) by Lonely Planet Kids for free in exchange only for my honest and unbiased review of You Rule!: A Practical Guide to Creating Your Own Kingdom (Lonely Planet Kids) by Lonely Planet Kids.

I was amazed by this book it was the absolute perfect blend of history with child interest factors. The book teaches children history, but it is sneaky about it. The reader is learning history as he or she reads, but the reader is not really aware that they are learning history because it is not a dry textbook, but instead filled with interesting facts.

The book takes the view point of teaching the reader how to rule their own kingdom whether their kingdom is their bedroom, house, or their own country. It then relates history to the decision that the reader would need to make about his or her kingdom. It draws its histories from many cultures not just America or Europe, but from the entire world.

This book is truly the perfect book to give to a child to get him or her interested in history. The book is perfect for getting a child to develop an interest in history because lets face it the book is interesting and fun not dry and boring like most history books.

Vendetta by Lisa Harris

Vendetta (The Nikki Boyd Files #1)Vendetta by Lisa Harris
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Do you love a fast pace book? The race to save the girl from the abductor while racing the ticking clock? If so that you, like me, will enjoy reading Vendetta by Lisa Harris. This book is about a woman who has joined the Tennessee Missing Person Task Force after her sister's abduction ten years prior. Now a new girl is missing and the same man that took the woman's sister has taken this teenage girl. The book has a quick paced, with psychological elements a long with thriller ones. I enjoyed how this book kept me on the edge of my seat waiting for the bullet to leave the gun as Nikki was faced with losing her life in the pursuit of her sister's abductor/killer.

Monica
He made me wait.
He always made me wait when he was serious and the longer I waited, the more serious he was. I thought, as I waited on the bed with my cheek to the bedspread and my ass in the air, that he was making me wait longer than ever. The anticipation made the backs of my legs tingle. I wanted to touch myself. At first I thought, just to see how wet I was, but he’d know and he’d punish me by not letting me come.
He said nothing when he finally entered the room. He stood by me. I couldn’t see him. I could only feel his presence, hear his breath, his intentions.
He laid his hand on my lower back and pressed down. It was the standard correction. My ass was never high enough.
“Thank you,” I said.
He stood and undid his belt.
“Thank me later. Get on your back and open your legs. Knees up. I want to see that cunt.”
I did it. He positioned himself on the foot of the bed, where I could see him between my legs. Half-open shirt and cock-strained trousers. Belt looped in his right hand. Watch and wedding ring on this left.
I almost came just looking at him. And when he reached over and pulled my legs wider apart, I lost myself in a rush of sensation.
“Did you just come?” he asked.
“I’m sorry.”
He shook his head. “You’re going to hurt for that.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Open your mouth.” I did, and he put the belt in it.
“You know I don’t do toys,” he said, running his hands over the length of my inner thigh, engaging just enough nail to wake up the skin. “Toys are for children. But sometimes I have to make allowances for safety.”
He sat on the bed next to me and held up an oddly-shaped glass bulb about two inches long.
“Do you know what this is?”
“Yes. It’s a butt plug.” I said it around the belt, and it sounded like a series of grunts.
“I don’t want to be gentle, but I don’t want to harm you either. This is the solution. And I can’t makeshift one out of stuff I see around because I don’t want to take you to the hospital when something breaks inside you.”
He took the belt out. I had enough time to lick my lips before he grabbed my cheeks, forcing my mouth open, and put the butt plug in it.
“Get that wet for me.”
I rolled my tongue around the slick glass, and he put it in, pressing my tongue to the bottom of my mouth. I puckered my lips around the narrow part, sucking until the flat stopper pressed against my lips like a pacifier.
Jonathan went back to the foot of the bed and looped the belt back up. I held my legs open with my hands.
“Now, first. The original issue. You’re mine. When you let someone else get to you, you deny me my ownership. That is not acceptable.”
He tapped my inner thigh with the belt.
“I own you. I can get inside you. I can hurt you. I own your pain. No one else.”
The first thwack to my inner thigh came without warning, and it was as hard as he’d ever hit me. I screamed into the glass bulb and rolled.
“On your back Monica. Take your medicine.”
I rolled back and gingerly spread my legs. He whacked the other side. I screamed again and tears rolled down my face.
He waited, ever patient, until I got back to center. He yanked my legs apart.
“Don’t roll again. You stay on your back and you show me what’s mine—only mine—to hurt.”
I spread my knees, biting the thin part of the plug. The places he whacked still stung, even when he put two fingers inside me, the pain didn’t go away. It just moved up a level to a layer of pleasure, and I groaned into the plug when he twisted his fingers inside me.
“You’re fucking soaked.”
He ran his fingers twice over my clit, and I almost came again.
“Oh no, Goddess. You still need to be punished for that.”
He stepped back and I braced myself for what was to come. His face was deep in concentration and arousal, lids hooded, lips apart slightly. His pleasure was mine as much as mine was his.
On that realization, he pulled his arm back and rained three strikes to my left, and when I screamed and twisted he pulled me back, spreading my legs and giving me three on the right.
I couldn’t see him through my tears. He pulled the plug out of my mouth, leaving a trail of cry spit between us.
He made nothing of my sobbing. He owned it. If he didn’t want me to cry, I wouldn’t be crying.
“Open your ass for me.”
I put my hands over my ass, and pulled the cheeks apart. He pulled me open with his fingers, looked at what he had to work with, and pressed the plug to my ass.
“How you doing, goddess?”
“Okay,” I sobbed.
“Do you remember your safeword?” He pushed the plug in. It was wider than it looked, and my asshole stretched out.
“Ah! Hurts!”
“Safeword?”
“Tangerine and fuck you.”
“Breathe, brat,” he said, jamming it in, then out so the widest part stretched me.
I breathed, and he stroked my clit slowly, then kissed it. My body relaxed when his lips touched me, and when his tongue flicked it, my back arched with pleasure.
The plug slid in and stayed.
“Legs down. Get on all fours. Let me see.”
When I pressed my legs together, I felt the welts. They were shockingly painful, yet I felt a rush of happiness and well-being when they stung.
Behind me, I heard the rustle of clothing. He was getting naked. Bless him. Bless him bless him he was going to fuck me. I closed my eyes and let the wash of contentment run through my veins.
He ran his hands through my hair, grabbed a fistful and twisted my head to him. He looked at my face, as if checking on me. Satisfied, he got a knee on the bed.
“Open your mouth. It gets fucked first.”
I opened up. I had no choice. I wanted nothing more than his cock in my throat.
I took it. All of it, looking up at him. He pushed all the way down, pumping my face five times before pulling out so I could breathe.
“Safe word? You got it?”
“I know it.” I said, then opened my mouth for him.
He gripped my hair hard. “Good.” He shoved my face onto his cock and fucked my throat, pulling away long enough for me to breathe or safe out, then fucked my mouth again. I was panting when he finally stopped.
“Good girl. Would you like to come?”
“Yes, please.”
“I’m going to punish you for the first time you came. Are you ready?”
“Yes.”
He pushed me onto my back and opened my legs. He slid his hand between them, rubbing me with four fingers, then he slid them inside.
“Oh, God.”
The next thing was a surprise, the slap right on my cunt was painful and sharp, causing me to scream. It blossomed into a hint of pleasure.
“You get three. That was one. Count.”
He slapped it.
“Two.”
Again, and hard. My back arched and I cried out. “Three!”
“You’re so fucking good,” he growled, moving his hands over me. “Look at me. I love you. Come now.”
I didn’t answer. I couldn’t. Not when he stroked me like that. I’d been bursting before he even touched me, so on his third stroke my ass clenched and the pain of the welts disappeared as I came into his hand.
I came off the high when he pulled the plug out of my ass. I gasped.
He reached for his night table drawer and got out a washcloth and lubricant. The plug went into the washcloth, the lube went all over my ass.
I put my hands in his hair and turned to my side. He got up on his knees and put my right leg over his right shoulder.
“You ready?” he asked.
“Yes, please. Do it hard. Make it hurt.”
He did, thrusting his huge cock in my ass in two strokes. It stretched me to the point of pain just the way I liked, but it wasn’t the same sharpness as I felt when he fucked it without a plug. I was full. Too full. Breaking softly around his cock.
“How is that?” he asked, leaning over my bent leg to kiss my cheek.
“Fuck. So good. So fucking…my God.”
His hips moved faster, deeper, pushing into my ass. He flicked my clit, and even though I’d just come, the rising tide of another orgasm filled me.
He put his face to my cheek and owned me, gasping in my ear. His right arm was looped under my right leg, and he flicked my clit. Not one part of my body wasn’t aware of his presence.
I owned him. I made this beautiful man gasp in my ear. His pleasure was mine, and my pain was his.
“Hurt me, Jonathan. Hurt—”
He pinched my clit and I screamed. Pain drove through me, and the orgasm was so powerful, such a braid of sensation from both ends of the spectrum that I nearly lost consciousness. My ass clenched, pulsing around him.
“Yes. That.” He grunted and thrust deep, stilled in his release.
When he took the last gasp, I rolled onto my back and he slid his dick out of me.
“You’re amazing,” he said, kissing my face. His cheeks were rough and I enjoyed the scratchy sensation. “Literally. You amaze me. How good you are.”
“I love you.”
“I adore you.” One last peck on the lips, and he stood up, holding his hand out. “Let me take care of you.”
***
After the shower he sat me on the cold marble vanity and had me spread my legs with my heels on the edge of the counter. The welts inside my thighs were an angry red and looking at them made me want to get fucked again.
“I did a number on you,” Jonathan said, rubbing a soothing cream over them. His touch was firm and gentle, healing and arousing.
“I needed it.”

This book was a great read; it was a christian book, but it did not have a ton of scripture in it. While the book is a completely true story about the author the way the author narrates it makes it read like a fiction book would. This technique is great because it makes the book interesting to readers, believers, and non believers. I plan to give this book to my father in the hope that it will lead him to believing in God and Jesus.

Merry Mary Chapter 1

Chapter 1
The first rays of pink sunshine ushered in another day of suffering for the people who called Monroe Park in downtown Richmond home. An early winter storm had dumped six inches of snow on the city. With no clouds to blanket in warmth, temperatures had dipped into the teens for the third night in a row.

Scottie Darden parked her 4Runner alongside the dirty snowbanks on Main Street. She pulled her stocking cap down over her blonde mane and tucked her camera inside her down coat. Grabbing the two Bojangles’ bags and carton of coffee from the backseat, she trudged through the snow to a cluster of men and women huddled around a burning trash can.

Eyeing the bags of food, the group of five homeless people navigated toward Scottie. She handed out sausage biscuits and paper cups of coffee.

Scottie had stumbled upon the Five by accident a year ago while investigating a series of muggings in the area. Their despondent faces had such a profound impact on Scottie that she’d returned the next day with warm blankets and buckets of fried chicken from Lee’s. Their gratitude had moved her even more, and over the next twelve months, she’d stopped by on a regular basis, always delivering nourishment and supplies. She’d seen others come and go, but this core group of five banded together like a family.

“I brought extras today.” Scottie held up the second bag.

Mabel gestured toward a row of makeshift tents fifty feet in front of them. Her name wasn’t really Mabel. At least not as far as Scottie knew. With gray hair pulled back from her café au lait face, the old woman reminded Scottie of the housekeeper who once worked for her grandmother.

Scottie had never exchanged names with any of the Five. She’d grown to know them by their physical appearances instead.

Buck was a strapping black man of about thirty, the one Scottie feared the most because of the temper she sensed smoldering just beneath the surface Then there was Pops, the oldest male, with leathery skin the color of dark chocolate. While he never showed his teeth, Scottie often detected the hint of a smile tugging along his lips. She’d named the woman with the plain face and dull green eyes Miss Cecil after her third grade teacher. She referred to the man in the wheelchair, with both legs amputated at the knee, as Dan, after Lieutenant Dan in the movie Forrest Gump.

Scottie offered each of the Five another biscuit before moving to the makeshift tents. She passed out biscuits to women and men who were buried under blankets and sleeping bags. She heard the faint sound of crying outside the fourth tent. She tapped lightly on the cardboard door. When no one responded and the crying grew louder, she pulled back the cardboard and peeked inside.

“Hello in there,” she called in a soft voice. “Can I interest you in some breakfast?”

The crying intensified to a squall. Beneath a threadbare blanket, Scottie made out the unmoving form of an adult-size body and the flailing limbs of a smaller figure next to it.

“Hello.” Scottie dropped to her knees and crawled inside. “Can I hold your baby for you while you eat a biscuit?”

When the adult body remained still, Scottie peeled back the blankets to reveal a baby—three or four months old if she had to guess—with blonde peach fuzz on top of her head and a beet-red face. A girl, judging from the dirty pink fleece sleeper she was wearing. She pulled the covers back the rest of the way and gasped at the sight of the woman’s gray skin and purple lips. Scottie assumed the woman was the baby’s mother. She backed slowly out of the tent. “Someone, please help!” she cried. “I think this woman in here is dead.”

The Five fled the scene, along with every other homeless man and woman in sight. Scottie patted her pockets for her phone, then remembered she’d left it connected to the charger on her bedside table. She surveyed the area for help—a policeman, a student, a businessman on his way to work—but the park was deserted.

Scottie crawled back inside and picked up the baby, rocking her back and forth until she settled down a bit. She scooted over closer to the baby’s mother and checked her wrist and neck for a pulse, but there was none. The woman had been dead long enough for her skin to grow cold. Her eyes were closed, but her rosy lips were turned up into a smile, as though she’d seen an angel. Poor woman was probably no more than twenty years old.

Scottie pulled the blanket over the woman’s face and said a silent prayer.

Getting to a phone to call for help was the only thing on her mind when she zipped the baby inside her coat and made a dash for her car.

First off I really am barely a hobby chef. I cook occasionally when needed and I do not cook meat at all. I am a complete vegetarian, no meat at all, but I do eat animal products like milk and such. I was interested in this book because the techniques could be used to cook tofu. I was rather disappointed on this front because most of the recipes involved meat and I had to wade through them and the massive amounts of history and background information to find the few tofu recipes. I really wish there were more of them. However on the bright side almost all of the recipes can be adapted to use tofu instead of meat with just a few changes. I found the images to be beautiful. I also like the fact that the book came with its own page marker (very useful).
