Sunborn Rising: Beneath the Fall

Sunborn Rising: Beneath the FallOn a distant world of forests floating on an ocean around a star, a blight threatens to plunge all life into darkness.
But three friends seek the light.
Together, they will Fall and be lost.
And at the very Root of darkness, they will find themselves.
But will it be enough to help them find their way home?

The World of Cerulean
Light and water flow from the ocean into the roots of the Great Trees, up through the boughs, and out over the lush canopies. But the once vibrant treescape has grown dim over generations of arboreal life, and the creatures of the forest have forgotten the light.
Barra, a young, willful Listlespur, finds her late father’s hidden journal, and reads about the old world and the mysterious plague her father believed destroyed it. He wrote that he warned the Elders. He urged them to take action. Those were his last words.
Together with her two best friends, Barra will explore every bark, wood, and leaf of the Great Forest to relight her world and complete her father’s story, even if she has to travel beneath the Fall.

My Review
First off I really liked the illustrations, I felt they were what really raised the book above others in its genre.  Sunborn Rising: Beneath the Fall takes place on the planet Cerulean which is a star at the middle of a ocean covered by a forest where many creatures live. The main characters are three young Arboreals who journey to find out why the Great Trees are dying. Their journey eventually leads them on a quest to save their world. My favorite character in this book was Barra Swiftspur; her journey begins when she finds her ,believed dead, father's notes on Creepervine. Creepervine is a fungus that her father thought could endanger everyone. I really liked how Barra Swiftspur proved herself to be an independent female character with how she defied her own mother in order to follow in her father's steps to try and save her planet. I found it admirable how she rose to the challenges that she faced. I feel like each challenge she overcame helped her to become the Listlespur that she was meant to be. The Truth about Angles by Tony Evans

How much do you know about angels?

Few supernatural beings are of more speculation than angels. In art we see them depicted as chubby babies and fierce, radiant warriors. Sometimes they wield swords; other times a bow and arrow surrounded by floating hearts. Some have halos; some do not. Clearly we’re confused.

In The Truth About Angels, Tony Evans goes to the Scriptures to set the record straight. He clearly and simply explains who angels are, what they do, and it what it all means for the everyday lives of believers.

A short, practical, and engaging book, The Truth About Angels is a one-stop guide to the role of angels in the world and eternity. It will help you fight the good fight of faith, knowing that the heavenly hosts are waging war on your behalf.

From the Back Cover
"Why do you need to know about angels?" Because there’s a divine fight happening, and you are the prize!

Angels are one thing in pop culture and another in the Bible. But given their critical role in life and eternity, we need to know the truth.

In his clear, engaging style, Tony Evans sets the record straight. Giving the Bible’s basic teaching on angels and demons, he explains:

Their origin, activities, and future
How to understand them and their impact on us
How to use their gifts and services for God
Everything we see in the physical realm is somehow influenced by something in the spiritual realm. Angels and demons are at the heart of the struggle—and so are you.

My Review

I have to say part of the reason this book became interesting to me was because of the TV show supernatural. The shows has angels and demons as characters and after having watched the show for a while I realized I did not really know that much fact about angles. When I came across this book for review I immediately was interested. I found the book to be a bit dry, but I was expecting that. I really liked how the book kept everything short and too the point. I found it interesting to learn about angles. One thing I learned that I did not know before was that mediums and spiritualists are consider wrong in the eyes of God and that they are not from God. I was never a believer of mediums, but I never really thought of them as wrong, just frauds. I was sent this book for free for only my honest and unbiased review.

Yeast Infections аnd Relief

Yeast Infections аnd Relief is an eBook that helps people with: vаginаl yеаѕt infесtiоnѕ, skin rashes and eczema, jосk itch, vаginаl discharge, mаlе yеаѕt infections, nаil fungus, mouth and throat yеаѕt infections, and diареr rаѕh yеаѕt infесtiоnѕ. This eBook explains what a yeast infection is, how it is caused, and how to treat it effectively. I found this book to be very informative on the nature and treatment of: vаginаl yеаѕt infесtiоnѕ, skin rashes and eczema, jосk itch, vаginаl discharge, mаlе yеаѕt infections, nail fungus, mouth and throat yеаѕt infections, and diареr rаѕh yеаѕt infесtiоnѕ. I do however feel that this eBook was perhaps mistitled because this eBook is about so much more than just yeast infections. I opened this book expecting to learn how to treat a yeast infection quickly and was pleasantly surprised at the additional information available on skin rashes and eczema, jосk itch, and nаil fungus.

Yeast Infections аnd Relief is broken up into eight different chapters. Each chapter focuses on a different ailment, the causes of the ailment, and a treatment plan. I liked that each treatment plan was broken down into stages as it made it easier to understand each step of the treatment process. Further I liked how the treatment plans were things I could do myself at home without a doctor.

Yeast Infections аnd Relief is a well written book that has all of the information anyone could ever need on various ailments and their treatment plans. Yeast Infections аnd Relief uses simple and easy to understand languages without any medical jargon. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to learn how to treat vаginаl yеаѕt infесtiоnѕ, skin rashes and eczema, jосk itch, vаginаl discharge, mаlе yеаѕt infections, nаil fungus, mouth and throat yеаѕt infections, and diареr rаѕh yеаѕt infесtiоnѕ.

Book Excerpt:
The phone  rang  at the suburban home of attorney Mike Zorich around one- thirty on a Sunday afternoon in October. Mike put down the crossword puzzle and hit the mute button on his remote. He could still watch the San Francisco 49er football game as the players ran around silently on the screen.

He wondered who would be calling him at this hour.

“Mr. Zorich, how are you? This is Detective Tom Kirkland, Sacramento P.D.”

“Detective Kirkland, it’s been some time since we spoke.”

“I understand you spent last night talking to the reunion party at the Sheraton.”

“I did, but how would you know that?”

“I have one of the alums here at the station and he told me all about it. In fact, he would like to talk to you. His name is Jason Robinson. We have him on an open homicide investigation. Okay?”

“Yeah, sure. Put him on.”

There was a pause and a couple of clicks on the other end of the line.

“Mr. Zorich, I need some help. Can you help me?   My name is Jason Robinson. I was at the reunion dinner last night. They have me down here and they say that I am a suspect in a murder. But I didn’t do it. Can you come down here and get me out of here?  I don’t have a lot of money but I will pay you. I promise. I heard you speak last night at our reunion dinner. You have to help me.”

“Where exactly are you now? Is there anyone near you?”

“I’m at the police station in a small room. I’m by myself. They won’t say what is going to happen to me.”

“Okay. Who was murdered?  Do you know?”

“Yes, it’s Lori McDonald. She’s a former classmate of mine. She was at the dinner last night too.”

“Has Kirkland talked to you yet?”

“Yeah, but just for a few minutes. I was hoping to clear it all up and maybe they would let me go. Now I’m not too sure about that.”

“All right. Sit tight. I will be right down. Just don’t talk any more. Tell them you talked to me and I said that you were not allowed to talk to anyone. Got that?  Blame me. Tell them that the lawyer said you can’t talk to anyone.”

“Yeah, I’ve got that.”

“Do you have relatives or friends nearby?”

“My parents live in Carmichael  and my wife and I live in Los Altos. Down in the Bay Area. That’s where we live.”

“Okay. Have you called her yet?”

“No, I just got the one phone call. They said I could call a lawyer and I don’t know any lawyers. I just remembered you from last night so I asked to call you.”

“Okay. I will be right there. Just don’t talk with anyone until I get there. Got that?”

“Yeah.”

“I mean no one.”

My Review

I have always been a fan of any type of book that focuses on cops, killers, and Agents. This book was bit different because it was written from multiple perspectives. There are chapters that focus on the Lawyer and the main Suspect. I found it interesting to read about the murder case from the perspective of a lawyer. I found the law enforcement officers depicted in this book to be somewhat incompetent in that the main suspect was the only suspect they investigated for the murder. Real cops would hopefully investigate other possible suspect before an arrest. It shows how little leg work the cops did from the fact that the lawyer was able to come up with several possible suspects that had motive that the cops never investigated. Had the cops investigated the other suspects that plot line of the book would have been very different and it might not have been as focused on the lawyer, however I would have still prefered it that way. Overall the book moved at a moderate pace and would be an interesting thriller for anyone who enjoys murder books.  I was sent a free copy of this book for only my honest and unbiased review.

Editorial Reviews

  1. Warning, once you start reading you won't want to stop! From the opening pages to the final climax, this book is a nonstop roller coaster ride of thrills, danger, action, and drama. I liked that it wasn't predictable and you can tell that the author really knows what he is writing about, as the language and actions are very authentic for a convincing police procedural and courtroom/legal drama. As far as the plot is concerned I give it five stars easy. I liked that is seemed believable and not contrived, and that it wasn't easy to figure out the mystery. Ken Malovos shows great passion and talent and can obviously spin a compelling tale. Recommend for fans who enjoy a thrilling ride. (5 stars)Darlene Cupp-- Goodreads Reviewer.
  2. I was hooked from the first paragraph of "Fatal Reunion" and my interest never wavered for a moment! I loved the creative and strong characters and plots that continued to build and shock and surprise, and I thought Zorich was a great lead, flawed and resourceful and passionate. Just when you think you know what's happening, something comes along to throw a wrench in it. This is good because I HATE books that are super predictable. And this one isn't. Although there are some familiar themes and tropes at play, the author brings a unique voice and makes it all his own. I appreciated the brisk pace and the vivid, descriptive details and strong word choice that really brought the story to life - accurate world building and authentic character development is absolutely crucial in selling a convincing story and it is done quite nicely here. Will be interested in seeing where this series and our leads go. Recommend for anyone who enjoys a well-written, original legal thriller with unexpected twists.(5 stars) Laura Clarke-- Barnes & Noble Reviewer.
  3. "Fatal Reunion" By Ken Malovos was awesome! I haven't read anything like that in a long time, if ever. For once it seemed like the characters were anything but the stock, ordinary typical hero/protag guys, but instead all had demons, motivations, secrets, and I thought the whole courtroom process was pretty cool too. As I was reading I was trying to figure out the 'truth' and then I was totally wrong and I liked that! There are some really unexpected things that happen that you REALLY don't expect to happen to a main character, and I wasn't sure how it would play out after that... I have some mixed feelings but I think it works. Was wondering how the author would wrap it all up, but in the end it all came together to create a fresh-feeling novel that was out of the ordinary and kept me totally hooked throughout. This is a great addition to what looks to be a promising series and when the next comes out I'll be reading it! (5 stars) Jhonni Parker-- Indie Book Reviewer.
  4. I'll admit that "Fatal Reunion" wouldn't be my normal type of read (I'm more of a fantasy and romance gal) but I've been wanting to read more out of my comfort zone lately and expand my tastes... the premise and sample looked intriguing so I thought I'd give it a chance. I'd so glad I did! It was far more exciting than I would've guessed, and I found myself flipping the pages as fast as I could to see what would happen. I was totally wrapped up in the drama and liked the courtroom scenes and really felt like I was part of the whole experience, from Jason's arrest tot he investigation to the trial...there were some really shocking twists that you "really" don't expect with the characters, and I liked how everything came full circle at the end, it was weirdly bittersweet. This was a quick read with lots of exciting twists and turns, and I think that Ken Malovos made a legal thriller-novel fan out of me! (5 stars) EssieHarmon-- Goodreads Reviewer..

My Review

Malibu Farm Cookbook: Recipes from the California Coast by Helene Henderson (Author), Martin Lof (Photographer) is a interesting cookbook. It is split into sections based on ingredients. For instance the chapters are From the: coop, farm and vegetable beds, hive, dairy, grass-fed beef, sea, olive grove, hen house, vineyard, baker and pastry maker. The organization of the book was a bit different from most cookbooks, but ti worked well for this book. The recipes were well written using as few words as possible (no unneeded instructions or directions). For instance there is a recipe of espresso ice cream shots. The recipe pretty much reads make a shot of espresso, put two scoops of vanilla ice cream on top and enjoy. This recipe takes up maybe half a page and has a photo of the completed recipe. I really liked this approach to recipe writing. I also liked that almost every recipe had a photo to go with it. I found that some of the recipes were a little out there for me, but I could see some of my friends and family wanting to try them so I could see myself making them in the future. I was sent a free copy of Malibu Farm Cookbook: Recipes from the California Coast by Helene Henderson (Author), Martin Lof (Photographer) for only my honest and unbiased review.

The Slush Pile Brigade (A Nick Lassiter Novel Book 1) by Samuel Marquis

The Slush Pile Brigade (A Nick Lassiter Novel Book 1) by Samuel Marquis

On his thirtieth birthday, Nick Lassiter has lost his girlfriend and his job, is wanted by the police, and has discovered that his unpublished thriller, Blind Thrust, has been stolen and turned into a blockbuster movie called Subterranean Storm. Even worse, the movie is based on a soon-to-be best-selling novel by Australian thriller writer Cameron Beckett, one of the world’s biggest brand name authors. Rather than seek revenge through a financial settlement or public humiliation, Lassiter sets out for New York to obtain mea culpas from Beckett and his renowned literary agent, whom he is certain colluded with the Aussie in stealing his debut novel.
Once in New York, Lassiter, and his three quirky fish-out-of-water friends who insist on accompanying him, instantly run afoul of the law and other powerful forces intent on thwarting them and their mission. As they encounter one thorny obstacle after another, the scope of their inquiries expands and they are soon in way over their heads, battling toe-to-toe not only against the mega-best-selling author and his agent, but a formidable army of antagonists, including the NYPD, Beckett’s Big Five publishing house security squad, and the Russian mob. Collectively, these adversaries present Lassiter with the greatest—and deadliest—challenge of his life.

Unexpectedly aided by his CIA father, Director of the Russian Counterintelligence Desk, and his former girlfriend turned CIA-informant, Lassiter and his comrades take to calling themselves the Slush Pile Brigade. Outmatched and outgunned, they are foiled at virtually every turn but still they are determined to win. But will justice be attained? Can they prove that Beckett and his crooked literary agent have stolen Lassiter’s blockbuster novel and are undeservedly reaping the success? And more importantly, will they solve one of the most important counterintelligence cases in CIA history and actually live to tell about it?
The Slush Pile Brigade is comparable to the modern suspense novels of Daniel Silva, Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, Ken Follett, Stephen Hunter, David Baldacci, and Kyle Mills.

From the Author
What was the inspiration behind both "The Slush Pile Brigade" and "Blind Thrust", the novel stolen from fledgling writer Nick Lassiter in the novel? "Blind Thrust" seems more closely aligned to your day-to-day work as an environmental hydrogeologist, while "The Slush Pile Brigade" seems like an adventure in your imagination.

I actually wrote "Blind Thrust" before "The Slush Pile Brigade." The inspiration behind "Blind Thrust" is my experiences in California and Texas as a registered professional geologist in assessing earthquake hazards and fault classifications. I wrote the novel and my agent was pitching it to publishers in New York. I began wondering, "What if a mega-best-selling author was having writer's block, needed a good story, and actually colluded with his literary agent to steal a promising novel by a no-name author from the slush pile, an author who happened to be an expert in his field like me and had written a scientifically-accurate novel like "Blind Thrust?"

I wondered to myself how I would try and seek revenge. Once I dug into the research, I quickly discovered that big-name publishers, producers, writers, editors, and directors in both the literary industry and Hollywood pilfer creative works from no-name authors and screenwriters all the time. It made me angry. And that is why I wrote "The Slush Pile Brigade." Like a lot of people, I root for the smart, hard-working little guy and want him him to be able to earn a fair wage for his creative work.

Biography
Samuel Marquis is a bestselling, award-winning suspense author. His books include "The Slush Pile Brigade," "Blind Thrust," "The Coalition," and "Bodyguard of Deception." He works by day as a VP-Hydrogeologist with an environmental firm in Boulder, Colorado, and by night as an iconoclastic spinner of historical and modern suspense yarns. He holds a Master of Science degree in Geology, is a Registered Professional Geologist in eleven states, and is a recognized expert in groundwater contaminant hydrogeology, having served as a hydrogeologic expert witness in several class action litigation cases. He also has a deep and abiding interest in military history and intelligence, specifically related to the Golden Age of Piracy, Plains Indian Wars, World War II, and the current War on Terror.

His technical scientific background and passion for military history and intelligence have served Marquis well as a suspense writer. His first two thrillers, The Slush Pile Brigade and Blind Thrust, were both #1 Denver Post bestsellers for fiction, and his first three novels received national book award recognition. The Slush Pile Brigade was an award-winning finalist in the mystery category of the Beverly Hills Book Awards. Blind Thrust was the winner of the Next Generation Indie Book Awards in the suspense category, an award-winning suspense finalist of both the USA Best Book Awards and Beverly Hills Book Awards, and a Foreword Reviews' Book of the Year award finalist (thriller & suspense). His third novel, The Coalition, was the winner of the Beverly Hills Book Awards for a political thriller.

Former Colorado Governor Roy Romer said, "Blind Thrust kept me up until 1 a.m. two nights in a row. I could not put it down. An intriguing mystery that intertwined geology, fracking, and places in Colorado that I know well. Great fun." Kirkus Reviews proclaimed The Coalition an "entertaining thriller" and declared that "Marquis has written a tight plot with genuine suspense." James Patterson compared The Coalition to The Day After Tomorrow, the classic thriller by Allan Folsom; and Donald Maas, author of Writing 21st Century Fiction and two novels, compared The Coalition to the classic political assassination thriller The Day of the Jackal. Other book reviewers have compared Book #1 of Marquis's World War Two Trilogy, Bodyguard of Deception, to the spy novels of John le Carré, Daniel Silva, Ken Follett, and Alan Furst.

Mr. Marquis lives in Colorado with his wife and three children and he plays competitive lacrosse, hikes, and skis on weekends when he isn't writing.

My Review
Nick Lassiter ended up being my favorite character in the The Slush Pile Brigade (A Nick Lassiter Novel Book 1) by Samuel Marquis. I really liked him as a character especially his determination to get justice for himself. This book reminded me of the movie called  Big Fat Liar. Like the movie the main character sets out to prove that his book was stolen by an author and made into a money making movie. Consider that Big Fat Liar was one of my favorite movies when I was younger I began to fall in love with this book from the get go. I really saw this book as an adult version of Big Fat Lair with its own unique plot twists, characters, good guys, and bad guys. The story line is very involved and I enjoyed all of the plot twists. My favorite twist was the involvement of the CIA, though I won't going any further into the twists then that so as to avoid spoiling an amazing book for you. My Review
Little One, God Made You Special By Amy Warren Hilliker is an adorable book about how every child is made special by God. The pictures are amazingly well done and breath-taking. The books words are all very simple which means that a young child can easily understand them. I disagree with the age range of this book I feel that it would be good for ages one to six. It is a bit simple for a eight year old, but it would be great as a book read by a parent to a child or as a first reading book for a toddler. The book does not use paper pages, but instead pressed cardboard making it an ideal book for a very young child. I was sent a copy of this book for free for only my honest and unbiased review.
